Ladybug

There are different varieties of ladybugs. The "typical" ladybugs in Virginia are bright red with circular body and a few black spots.  Asian Lady Beetles are often mistaken for ladybugs.

They are typically a little less than a half inch, but that can vary. Females are usually slightly larger than males.  They are winged and like to live in gardens, where there is shelter and ample food (like aphids)
